TEXTILE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT
Textile is one of three basic needs that are summarized in the form of human‘s coverage, beverage, housing and nutrition. In classical expression, textile products are together with human beings from cradle to grave. For centuries, people dressed up just to cover themselves and deck out; however, along with evolving and changing world the use of textiles has spread over not only in manufacturing of clothing as well as a wide range of industrial applications such as construction, medical, aerospace, and a new application field called "technical textiles" was formed. On the other hand, nowadays, people expect more functions from a textile product beyond dressing up and covering. This situation led to the formation of a new field known as "functional textiles".
Textile simply can be defined as “The art and technology of obtaining surfaces from all kinds of fiber”. Fibers must be subjected to many processes to become a surface. Each of these processes is directly under the responsibilities of Textile Engineers. Textile engineer provides usage of right processes, machines and parameters in processing suitable raw materials which was determined according to the properties of final product by textile engineers. In this respect, textile engineers try to increase the production efficiency and product quality via performing necessary analysis and controls in each stages and solving encountered problems. Textile engineers are directly or indirectly responsible also for the feasibility of the textile mill, establishment of the mill, selection, ordering and mounting of the machines, starting of the production, education of the employees, quality control, planning, and fabric organization. Furthermore, textile engineer can take charge in manufacturing of textile machines or sales and service departments of manufactured textile machines, being an account executive and similar positions. Briefly, a textile engineer can work in all fields related with textile.
The aim of our department is to train hard-working engineers who are compatible with expectations of the sector by considering necessities of the textile industry, have strong basic knowledge, researcher, think analytically, have good communication skills, innovative, adopted professional ethics, can communicate effectively with their environment, are conscious of their responsibility, and are prone to group work. To make the students ready for their careers by giving the necessary knowledge and skills during their education period and applying theoretical knowledge to practice is another goal of our department.
More than 650 factories of textiles, knitting and leather are found within the boundaries of Tekirdağ where our department is located. With this aspect, the region where our department is found is the most important textile production base of our country. Thus, this situation gives us an opportunity of converting theoretical knowledge given during the education period of students into practice easily. In this sense, Sector Integrated Education Model which will be implemented with bachelor’s fourth class students will be an example of applied education model. Moreover, usage of the infrastructure and training facilities of Vocational and Technical Education Center located in Çerkezköy established with the support of Turkish Textile Employers’ Association and Turkish Textile Foundation by the students of our department has a great role on strengthening the applied education model.
